Island Boy

I was asked by my colleague to replace him because he have a meeting at Sandakan on the same day. It has been a while since I’ve been in Banggi Island.

 

Well I’m a bit reluctant to go there because of a certain government official who is to me a bit of ‘ling si’. Can’t blame him totally. He was just doing his job. But the prospect of maybe taking a few nice photo of the place might do well? Unfortunately, it was raining the whole day, from the time I left KK until I reach Kudat. The only photo that I manage to take was the project site photo and when we were about to head back to Kudat the next day.

 

From the last time I went there; I think it was last year, there are some minor changes. The road work currently on going has made travelling a round a bit better; was just gravel road back then. It was sealed now at least. The water supply over there?

 

We did a water study of the island back in 2007. In general, wet season for the island is at the beginning and end of the year, dry season in the middle of the year. So the islander got their water from rain harvesting during wet season, buying the water from Kudat on dry season. Not all of the places have access to any of the river there because most of the river located on the northern part and population are concentrated on the south. Currently they are doing water supply work, building dam to collect what ever water it can collect. Elecrticity supply? Its available from 6pm till 6am everyday. So it’s pretty damn hot during the day.

 

Enough with the boring stuff. The good thing is non stop of fresh seafood. Yes, it’s FRESH! Need fish? Just pluck it out of the water. We ate crab that night, fresh crab, yummy! If you guys want to do sight seeing, there’s no tourism industry yet, but if you want to experience this islander life’s hardship, please come.

 

You have to book your accommodation early if you want to stay though, it’s always full. Most of it because of a few infrastructure project on that island. There are 2 ferries going in and out of Banggi. The one belong to Yayasan Sabah operates at 8am from Kudat and 2pm from Banggi coming back. Another private ferry operates 7am from Banggi and 2pm from Kudat coming back. Currently the Yayasan Sabah’s ferry is under repair.

 

I’ll keep an update if the has been any improvement on the Island. These photos I took when we are waiting for the ferry to send us back to civilisation.

 

 

I guess I woke up too early. What can I say, I’m a morning person. Waking up in the morning is not a problem for me.

 

 

Umm… afraid of the Craken I guess.

 

 

I hope that ferry can outrun the Craken!
